If you thought you could call a moving company and expect the movers who show up to handle a bunch of things for you, they won’t. In fact, there are a variety of things that your movers will NOT do and they are not afraid to say no. But why? If you are wondering why your movers cannot do many of the following tasks, it is because of liability reasons.
If you find that you need help with any of the actions they will not help you with, consider calling a friend or relative to help in place of the mover.
- Unhook Your Appliances
Your movers will not unhook and disconnect your appliances for you. This is left up to you and you will need to empty out, clean, and unhook the appliance prior to the movers showing up. If you are unable to do this or simple do not want to, you have two options: 1) hire someone to do it for you, such as an appliance company or 2) leave your appliances behind and buy new ones.
- Take the Satellite Dish
If you own a satellite dish, it is your responsibility to move it and remove any and all accessories that go with it. Movers will not touch or disconnect it for you as they simply do not have the knowledge to do so and if they damage it in the process, you can’t blame them.
- Move Large or Specialty Items
Most movers are not experienced with extremely large or specialty items. When we mention large and specialty items, we are talking about pianos, pool tables, safes, and similar items. If you have one of these items to move, you need to call a professional moving company that specializes in moving these items.
In addition, movers are unlikely to move very valuable items because the responsibility is just too great and you are better off moving it yourself to prevent any accidental breaks or damage.
- Perishable and Flammable Items
Yep, you read that right. Your movers will not move live plants, food, or any type of flammable items for you and no, you cannot place these items on the truck yourself. When it comes to these items, it is up to you to have them safely transported or disposed of.
In addition, your movers will not move your guns for you or allow them to be transported on the truck during the move. Again, you will need to make arrangements to have these items moved.
Unfortunately, there are many items that you will be left to disconnect, take down, and move yourself, but this is for your safety, the safety of your items, and the safety of your movers. If you find that you have a question about an item or two, call the moving company and ask them if their movers can move it and if the item is allowed on the truck.
