If you are planning on having a moving sale, it is important that you properly price your items, otherwise, no one is going to purchase them. If you are unsure of how to price your items for your upcoming sale, we will go over some of the ways below.
- Know What Items You Plan to Sell
One of the biggest mistakes that people make when it comes to their moving sale is that they price items too high for the average buyer. To prevent this from happening, go through all of the items you plan to sell. If you find something that you are still attached to or something that would be worth more than something you would find at a yard sale, put it to the side and do not sell it.
You want to make sure you offer items for sale that you are actually ready to sell. If you are still attached to an item, you will likely price it too high for someone to purchase.
- Put a Price on ALL Items
Try to avoid not placing a price on an item. Yes, it will take time to go through every item and label it, but it will help you in the long run. If you do not place a price on an item, this means that someone then needs to ask you how much the item is. The chances of someone asking are slim and you will likely miss out on a sale because of it.
If you do not want to label everything, there is one way to beat the process and that is to place a large poster or flyer with the amount of everything located in an area. For example, if you have a large tote, you could write on it, “everything in this tote $1.00.” The same goes for a table. You could place a posted on the table that reads, “everything on the table is 25 cents.”
- Don’t Sell Valuables
Above we mentioned that you should keep items out of the pile if you are still attached to them or know they are more valuable than what someone at a yard sale would pay. The ideal pricing structure is anywhere from one-third to half of the cost of the item new. Therefore, if you have antiques or valuables, take them to your local antique dealer and find out how much the item is worth. You will fetch more money for the items this way.
- Markdown the Items
Once it gets closer to the end of the sale, you should start slashing your prices to move the items. Remember, the goal of your moving sale is to make money and not to end up keeping all of your items. Therefore, all $1.00 items should be marked down to 50 cents or 25 cents to get the ball moving.
If you want to have a successful moving day sale, you need to price the items to move. If you price your items too high, no one will purchase them.
