Why Asking Friends and Family to Help You Move Might Be a Bad Idea

When you first decide to move and as the day approaches, you are probably starting to think about who you can ask to help you move. The first people you are likely to ask are your friends and family, right? Well, this may not be the best idea and you may actually be doing yourself a disservice by asking your friends and family. If you are wondering why this is a bad idea, we will go over some of the reasons below.

  1. Your Friends and Family May Not Stick to Timelines

Since your friends and family are close to you, they may not feel like they need to adhere to the timelines that you set and they may arrive late to help you move. This can cause your day to be delayed and you may become frustrated with them.

In addition, your friends and family may think it is okay to flake out on you and not show up when you are ready to move. This is problematic because it means that you are left without the help that you planned on and needed to get the move done.

  1. Accidents Happen but Not Everyone is Understanding

Although your friends and family are close to you, you may find that issues arise when accidents occur. For example, if you borrow a friend or family member’s truck and you accidentally wreck it or scratch the side of it, this will not always go over well.

As much as the two of you respect each other, accidents are not always resolved the way you would like them to be and there may be a disagreement, which in the worst case scenario, could lead to a dissolved relationship.

What to Do?

The answer is simple. Either move everything yourself and only ask for help lifting heavy items or hire a moving company to assist you during the move. If you do choose to hire a moving company, you will eliminate all of the problems that may arise between you and a friend or you and a family member. For example, your movers are going to show up and they will be there on time to move your items.

While working with a moving company may be more expensive, it will pay off for you in the long run. Why? Because the movers have insurance and if a scratch does occur on the truck, it is covered without a ruined relationship.

Lastly, hiring movers is a good idea too because sometimes your friends and family simply do not want to help. Instead of arguing with them, suck it up and hire the moving company.

If you are trying to decide whether or not to ask your family and friends to help you move, consider the points above. You will find that while you may have more fun with your family and friends, you will get a lot more done with movers on your side.
